January is my born month and I always travel for my birthday. This year I had no real birthday plans because my life had taken a turn in an unexpected direction. A friend of mine was celebrating his 50th just a week before my birthday. We decided to take a quick trip out of the country and headed to Mexico.

We flew out of Atlanta on January 29th on Frontier flight #153. Though we had a morning flight that was expected to take off at 9:15, the plane had some mechanical issues resulting in a nearly two-hour delay.  We boarded our 2.5-hour flight on a half-full plane allowing us plenty of room to spread out, sitting in seats 2D and 2F.

Upon arrival into Cancun, lines were very long getting through customs and immigration. This process took about 45 minutes. It was by far the longest time it has ever taken me to get into Cancun. Once we’d cleared customs we located our transportation providers. Lomas Travel provided us with an SUV shared transfer in which we rode with one other family that was headed to Nickelodeon. The entire ride with them being the first to be dropped off took about 45 minutes. It wasn’t too bad of a ride. We were comfortable.

El Dorado Royale is where we stayed. We arrived for our short two-night stay around 2:30 pm. The check-in process went smoothly. A credit card had to be on hold for incidentals and there was a small city tax that had to be paid. The tax was less than $5.

Now, let me tell you about this El Dorado Royale property by Karisma. This property is one of Mexico's premier adult-only resorts. It’s a AAA Diamond award-winning property and it’s a beachfront resort. While it is filled with unique and memorable wedding experiences for weddings of all sizes, that wasn’t our experience. We took in all the luxuries of the resort and indulged in the all-gourmet inclusive food options along with Pina Coladas across 10-15 restaurants. They also have 24-hour room service and concierge service for each building. My favorite in-room snack was an order of Shrimp Quesadillas and fries with a Coke.

We opted for the Double Queen, Swim-Up Junior Suite. The room held authentic dark hues of browns and yellows taking inspiration from Mexican culture. Our suite consisted of contemporary bathrooms with a large-size relaxing hot tub and double sinks.  The entire vibe was relaxing and could’ve been very romantic if that had been the nature of the trip. We had a pool right outside our patio that led to a lazy river. We were on the ground floor and could also see the beach from our terrace.

If you’re wondering about the weather in the middle of the winter, it was pleasant. Temperatures were in the 70-80s. The evenings were really windy and cooler.
